PHOTOS: James Gandolfini’s Son As Young Tony Soprano

The first images of Michael Gandolfini — the 19-year-old son of late legendary Sopranos actor James Gandolfini — portraying the young version of the character his dad made famous have finally hit the internet.

Gandolfini will be portraying a young version of the iconic Tony Soprano in the upcoming Sopranos prequel film, Newark.

Originally titled The Many Saints of Newark, the film is set in the 1960s in Newark, New Jersey during the Newark riots.

In addition to Michael Gandolfini, Newark stars Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michael Gandolfini, and Ray Liotta.

Nivola will be starring as Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Christopher Moltisanti, the character portrayed by Michael Imperioli in the original Sopranos series.

While it has been widely speculated that the father of Tony Soprano, Johnny Boy Soprano, will be appearing in a major role in the film, it is still unclear who will be portraying him, although our money is on Jon Bernthal.

Additionally, while it’s unclear what role Ray Liotta will be playing in the film, what kind of Northeast-based mafia movie would this be if Liotta wasn’t involved?

In that third photo specifically, it’s pretty stunning how similar Michael looks to his late father.

Newark, directed by Alan Taylor — who is known for his directorial work on prestige television shows such as Lost, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, and Mad Men — will be released in theaters in the United States on Friday, September 25, 2020.
