For the latest decade, Robert Downey Jr. has only played about four different roles, two of which are major blockbuster tentpole characters.
The first and foremost is obviously his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man — a role he’s held, and used to redefine his career, since 2008.
But the second, while not as profitable, is just as iconic, as he portrayed Sherlock Holmes alongside Jude Law’s Dr. Watson in 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows.
And while a third movie in the Sherlock Holmes franchise has been long promised (and, no, that abysmal Will Ferrell and John C. Reily comedy doesn’t count), details about the film have been few and far between.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter is, well, reporting that the release date for the third and likely final film in the franchise has been set for December 22, 2021.
Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter states that Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures are partnering on the film, which is being written by Chris Brancato — a co-creator of the Netflix hits Narcos and Narcos: Mexico.
Other than Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson, no other casting announcements have been made at this time.
