Warner Bros. and NetherRealm will hold the Mortal Kombat 11 live gameplay reveal at 10:30 am PT/ 1:30 pm ET.

The event came with many surprises. We also learned that there will be both old and new faces joining the Mortal Kombat roster. Iconic faces such as Raiden and Sub-Zero return. There will also be characters who fans did not see in the previous Mortal Kombat title such as Skarlet and Baraka. New characters will also make their debut here.

Geras is a new character hitting the Mortal Kombat scene. He has “time-control” abilities which he will use to fight. He is able to go back a few moments in time to his previous position and he can stop his foe in time for a brief moment and lay on some damage. He is also able to manipulate sand and stone to create objects such as spikes and walls.

While we’ve only seen glimpses of the Keeper of Time, NetherRealm has confirmed that Geras works for Kronika. The studio has announced that Kronika will be the main antagonist of the game, the first leading female villain in Mortal Kombat history. Not much is known about her power, but she has been running things since the beginning of the franchise. However, when Raiden kills Shinnok in Mortal Kombat X and alters the timeline, Kronika is forced to step in.

One of the most recognized characters in the series, it’s not surprising that Scorpion has also returned. He’s practically guaranteed a spot in every game, but it’s always great to see a familiar face. In the reveal trailer, we get a look that there may be some different costume designs as Scorpion sports a look that is a callback to earlier Mortal Kombat games.

Another iconic character from the Mortal Kombat franchise, it comes as no surprise to see Sub-Zero in the roster for the latest installment. Formerly known as Tundra, Sub-Zero has the ability to control ice (as his name suggests). His expertise with ice is second to none, and this cryomancer will have all his foes feeling the pain.

Sonya Blade

Sonya Blade is another well-known face of this franchise. A female soldier and former member of Earthrealm’s Special Forces unit, she is a woman who knows how to pack a punch. She is able to fight with pink high tech energy and her tactical expertise may give foes a run for their money. Sonya Blade has been part of this franchise from the beginning, it’s great to see this beloved character come back.

Shao Khan

The first character that is confirmed to be a pre-order bonus, the infamous Shao Khan. This brutal warlord comes to quite a surprise and incentive to pre-order the game.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Skarlet has returned to the Mortal Kombat roster. Fans of this ferocious warrior can rejoice as we haven’t seen her since Mortal Kombat (2011) and back then she was a DLC character. Her expertise in knives, as well as her chilling ability to utilize blood in however she sees fit, will make her quite the foe. Her elusive techniques and quick attacks will make her an interesting character to face and play.

Baraka is a face many fans can recognize from back on the day. He was introduced in Mortal Komat II as a loyal follower of the ruthless Shao Khan. Baraka was seen in Mortal Kombat X but only as an NPC, this time fans will be able to play as this unforgiving warrior. With his Tarkatan blades, we’ll witness his iconic move set and fatality.

Mortal Kombat 11 will start where Mortal Kombat (2011) left off. According to Polygon, NetherRealm’s states that, “Raiden has upset the balance of history with the death of Shinnok. Tired of Earthrealm’s defiance, Kronika, The Keeper of Time will bring order to the universe through any means necessary.”
The studio also let fans know that there will be a few characters who will meet (and most likely beat the crud out of) younger versions of themselves. NetherRealm also released the opening cinematic for the game, so fans will know what to expect from this title.

This event has given fans a lot to speculate and look forward to. However, announcements aren’t over just yet. NetherRealm also revealed that more information about Mortal Kombat 11 will be revealed on January 30, 2019, at the Kombat Kast livestream.

Warner Bros. Interactive Media
NetherRealm has announced that fighters in Mortal Kombat 11 will be customizable. Taking a page out of the Injustice 2 feature, players will be able to customize their character in any manner they prefer. For example, the player can change anything for Scorpion’s character such as his mask and costume. The player can even switch out his swords and spears to whichever they prefer. Players will also be able to pick special abilities that better suit their playstyles. This feature will really change how people play with the same character and add bring more interesting fights.

Battle Mechanics

NetherRealm has been considering how best to change things up since Mortal Kombat (2011). One of the most notable changes is the meter. Previously, the meter that used to be shared for moves like the combo-interrupting Breaker, X-ray moves, and enhanced attacks. Now it’s been split into two separate meters, one on the bottom right corner and the other on the bottom left.
The studio also included a new mechanic called ‘Fatal Blow.’ X-ray moves have now transitioned into these nasty looking combos once the player’s health drops below 30 percent. Mortal Kombat will also introduce another new mechanic known as ‘Flawless Block’. If a player is able to block an attack perfectly, this will open up an opportunity for a counterattack. This will help to turn the tides in a fight.
