Several UAB employees have been injured after returning from a retreat. According to reports, some of the employees are “seriously hurt” after a bus accident returning from Camp McDowell. WBRC is reporting that at least 18 people have been injured, with five in critical condition. Two have been life flighted to UAB Hospital. It was initially reported that students were injured in the crash, but an update to the story states those who were on the bus were employees.
The driver of the bus and another passenger are the victims who have been airlifted.
“We’re gathering information and contacting families and we will communicate more as soon as we learn the information,” UAB spokesman Tyler Greer said in a statement, via al.com.
UAB’s Adam Pope issued a follow-up statement which read, “Twenty-six UAB employees were involved in a bus accident in Winston County Friday afternoon. All are pediatric residents who were returning from a retreat at Camp McDowell. Ten people went to hospitals from the scene: seven to UAB Hospital and three to Cullman Regional Hospital. Other passengers suffered minor injuries. No fatalities have been reported.”

Nearly two dozen UAB Medical School students were injured when a bus overturned Friday in Winston County.
The crash happened on Valley Drive in the Houston area of Winston County, according to Alabama State Troopers. The bus was carrying medical students on a retreat at Camp McDowell.
There is no further information on the extent of the injuries.
“UAB confirms 25 UAB employees and a bus driver on a retreat hurt when their Blazer Express bus wrecked in Winston County. Again, paramedics tell me 5 are critical including 2 lifeflighted to UAB hospital,” Jonathan Hardison of FOX 6 wrote on Twitter.
“Paramedics are working to rescue 20 people injured in a bus wreck in the Arley/Houston area of Winston County. 6 of those patients are critical, 3 lifeflighted to UAB for treatment. We’ve got crews on the way to the scene.”
A report from WVTM13 reads: “Authorities are investigating a crash involving a UAB employees on a bus in Winston County. The university says it is working to contact families. More is expected to be released later.”
