What is this National Ice Cream Day?

Technically, July is usually considered National Ice Cream Month in total but the third Sunday of the month is singled out as National Ice Cream Day in the United States. For a little bit of a history lesson, the holiday first took place in 1984 Kentucky, in which both National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day were proclaimed to take place in July; that same year it would eventually be signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. According to The American Presidency Project, President Reagan proclaimed the virtues of ice cream:

“Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food. Over eight hundred and eighty-seven million gallons of ice cream were consumed in the United States in 1983.”
“The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. Indeed, nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, thereby contributing substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation’s dairy industry.”

Technically, the law only signified that July 1984 would have both an official National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day. That said, that has not stopped ice cream manufacturers from celebrating the holiday each year. After all, it is the public who wins in the end, since the holiday is celebrated with deals and discounts on ice cream. As if you needed an excuse to get ice cream!
