Jones was born in Atlanta, Georgia. While playing as a child, he was coached by Sandtown coach Gary Jones. He went on to attend Westlake High School, where he was selected as the conference “Player of the Year” during his senior year, and West Virginia University. During his collegial career, he was also ranked second on West Virginia’s career kickoff return yardage list with 1,475 yards and eleventh on the school’s career punt return yardage list with 404 yards; he is also one of the highest West Virginia players drafted.

During his junior year, Jones opted to forgo his senior year and declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft; he was the first defensive player drafted, taken sixth overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2005 NFL Draft, although a contract dispute cost him most of his training camp time. In 2007, he toyed his a career in wrestling, making a deal with the professional wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, although he ultimately was not allowed to physically participate in the matches. During this time, he also toyed with a musical career, announcing that he would be collaborating on a new hip-hop album with his new hip-hop group, Posterboyz, eventually releasing the single “Let it Shine” through a MySpace page. By 2008, however, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The following year, he later agreed to a one-year deal to play with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
