At long last, the round of 16 is upon us in the World Cup. In the first round of 16 game, France will be taking on Argentina for a spot in the quarterfinals. France coasted through its group in the group stage while Argentina barely squeaked by the group stage with a thrilling victory in its last match. Now, Lionel Messi will look to carry his inferior squad to an upset victory over France on Saturday.
Argentina’s success is due to its star forward Lionel Messi. There is a reason why Messi is in the discussion for being the greatest soccer play of all time. Messi has the ability to carry any team to success whether it is in domestic or international play. However, Messi struggled early on in this tournament which led to the team’s underachieving play in the group stage. Messi had a chance to win Argentina’s first World Cup game against Iceland but failed to score a penalty kick in the second half as Argentina had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Messi did redeem himself against Nigeria in the last contest by scoring a goal to help the national team advance to the round of 16. Now, Messi will need to play extremely well if Argentina has any hopes of upsetting such a talented foe.
France entered the World Cup as one of the favorites to lift the trophy. So far this tournament, France has done nothing but prove that it is a legit contender. France only allowed one combined goal in three group stage games and possess a powerful line of attacking forwards who can score with ease. France’s solid all-around play should pose some problems for Argentina who has struggled with consistency in the tournament thus far. Expect France to pressure Argentina’s defenders and midfielders constantly on Saturday in order to set up some serious attacking chances.
As for my prediction, I have to side with France. France is simply the better all-around team and should have no problems defeating Argentina if the team’s defense can keep Messi off the scoresheet. I expect France’s defense to shine once more as France clinches a spot in the quarterfinals.
