Soon-Shiong was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Chinese immigrant parents who fled from China during the Second World War. Going on to attend the University of Witwatersrand, he graduated 4th out of his class of 189, earning a bachelor’s degree in medicine at the age of 23. After working at a medical internship at Johannesburg’s General Hospital, he went on to study at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a master’s degree in 1979. Relocating to the United States, he began surgical training at the University of California, Los Angeles. He eventually became a board-certified surgeon in 1984.

Soon-Shiong joined UCLA Medical School in 1983, serving the facility until 1991 as a transplant surgeon. During this time, he also spent a few years as an associate investigator at the Center for Ulcer Research and Education. While in this position, he performed the school’s first whole-pancreas transplant. In 1991, Soon-Shiong left UCLA to start a diabetes and cancer biotechnology firm that eventually evolved into APP Pharmaceuticals by 1997.

Soon-Shiong founded NantHealth in 2007, which spun-off NantWorks by 2011. In 2010, with Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, Soon-Shiong founded the Healthcare Transformation Institute. Returning further in his educational pursuits, Soon-Shiong also served as a visiting professor at Imperial College, London in 2011. In 2016, Soon-Shiong later launched the National Immunotherapy Coalition. Branching out into media, by 2018, he also took control of two California-based publications: the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune.
