The University of South Florida has recently announced the death of Kenyatta Jones of the New England Patriots; the former NFL lineman died at the age of 39.

What happened?

According to WFLA, USF Interim Director of Athletics Scott Kull issued the following statement concerning Jones’ death:

“It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Kenyatta Jones at such an early age.”
“Our first NFL Draft pick and Super Bowl champion, Kenyatta demonstrated what USF football would become and was the first of what would be many talented and hard-working Bulls that have followed their dreams to the professional ranks. Our thoughts and prayers and those of Bulls Nation are with his family during this difficult time.”

According to Tampa Bay Times, a few of Jones’ co-workers have offered their condolences concerning his passing; former Bulls FB Keith Williams, a teammate of Mr. Jones on USF’s inaugural 1997 team, issued the following statement:

“Just a fun-loving guy, man, like a gentle giant.”
“But on that field, he took care of business.”

The same publication also quoted former Bulls C Joey Sipp as saying:

“You tell athletes all the time you can’t turn it off and turn it on when you wanted to. Kenyatta Jones was one of those guys who could turn it on and turn it off. … When he turned it on, he was unstoppable.”

Former Bulls G Anddrikk Frazier also described his memories of Jones:

“KJ brought a toughness and preparation that you would expect from someone who was competing for a starting job.”
“He became one of the guys immediately. His intensity in practice coupled with his encouragement during games, jokes on bus trips and team meals made him a team favorite and a basketball brother.”

As an an offensive lineman, Jones four NFL seasons in New England and Washington.

According to WFLA, Jones died suddenly from cardiac arrest in Colorado on Sunday. According to Tampa Bay Times, Jones’ mother, identified as Jessica Hadley-Brown, also confirmed the cause of death.
