At long last, the final leg of the Triple Crown in horse racing is finally upon us. This will be the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes and it is filled with potential drama and historical significance. This race is extremely important due to the potential of a horse winning the Triple Crown this year. Justify, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, now has a chance to win the Triple Crown if he can take home the Belmont States title as well. Whether or not you are personally a fan of horse racing, witnessing history is always priceless which makes this race a must-watch on Saturday evening.
The favorite in this race is Justify who was drawn in Post 1. As stated before, Justify won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness States so it is easy to comprehend why he is such a decisive favorite. However, there has only been one Triple Crown winner since 1979 (American Pharaoh in 2015) so his odds are not that great based on historical data.
It is also worth mentioning how Justify’s chances of winning improved significantly once it was announced that Audible would be skipping the Belmont Stakes. Audible, the third-place finisher at the Kentucky Derby, will be missing the Belmont Stakes because Audible and Justify share the same owners. These owners decided to sit Audible in order to make Justify more likely to win the Triple Crown. Had Audible been racing, he would have been my personal pick to win the Belmont Stakes.
With Audible out of the race, Justify’s biggest competition is Hofburg who is positioned in Post 4. Despite finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby, Hofburg has the second-lowest odds of winning this race due to his absence from the Preakness Stakes. While horses like Justify and Bravazo have raced multiple times in the past month and a half, Hofburg has been prepping for the Belmont Stakes specifically. The added length of the race could give Justify and Bravazo problems since both horses will have less time to prepare for it in comparison to Hofburg.
Luckily, I will actually be in attendance for the Belmont Stakes as I hope to be witnessing history this Saturday night. However, I personally do not think that Justify will win this race after he struggled down the straightaway at the Preakness Stakes. I think that the added length will give him problems as I believe that Hofburg will foil his Triple Crown aspirations.
