Sterling K. Brown is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Christopher Darden in the FX television anthology The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016) and Randall Parsons in the highly acclaimed NBC drama This Is Us (2016-). Early Life and Career (1990’s-2010’s)
The St. Louis native was born in 1976 as one of five siblings. He initially attended Stanford intending to get into business but discovered a passion for the stage as a freshman and changed his major to drama. Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree he went on to get his MFA at the Tisch School of the Arts.
Brown appeared on a wide variety of television shows, including ER, Alias, Supernatural, Castle, and Boston Legal and some films such as Stay (2005) and Brown Sugar (2002). He played Dr. Roland Burton on Army Wives for seven years, during which he fell in love with and married costar Ryan Michelle Bathe in 2007. In The People v. O. J. Simpson Brown played prosecutor Christopher Darden, a role that won him his first Emmy and Critics Choice Award. Brown was next cast as one of the leads on This is Us, a beloved family drama that solidified his newfound popularity and made him a household name. Brown even made awards season history with his second Emmy win, becoming the first African American actor to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as the first to win the SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama. The third season is This is Us is slated to premiere this fall.
Brown has also had an increased presence on the big screen. In January 2018 he had a small but poignant role in Marvel’s Black Panther as T’challa’s uncle and Killmonger’s father Prince N’jobu.
