The Early Years
Spade was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended St. Teresa’s Academy, an all-girl Catholic high school; she went on to attend the University of Kansas, although she later transferred to Arizona State University, where she graduated with a degree in journalism in 1985.
In 1986, she worked in the accessories department of Mademoiselle women’s magazine in Manhattan. During this time, she moved in with her eventual husband and business partner, Andy Spade, brother of actor David Spade, whom she had met in Arizona. After working her way up to senior fashion editor/head of accessories, she left the publication in 1991.
Kate and Andy Space launched Kate Spade Handbags, which was stylized as “kate spade handbags;” despite the name, the company eventually branched out to include clothing, jewelry, shoes, stationery, eyewear, baby items, fragrances, tabletop, bedding and gifts. By 2004, the company branched out to become “Kate Spade at home,” so that it now included bedding, bath items, china and wallpaper, among other items for the home. The same year, the company went international, launching a story in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan.
In 2006, Spade sold the remaining portion of her ownership stake in the Kate Spade brand, then taking time off to raise her family. Nearly ten years later, in 2016, she and her partners launched a new brand called Frances Valentine, named in honor of family members, which sold luxury footwear and handbags. In 2018, Spade was found dead at the age of 55 in her own New York City apartment.
