At long last, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals are finally upon us. This series is between the Washington Capitals and the Vegas Golden Knights. Both teams were able to win clinch their spots in the Stanley Cup on the road in the previous series which should be a good indicator about how unpredictable this series might be. However, the Capitals failed to win game one on the road and will now have to win game two in order to even up the series. Expect this game to be extremely competitive as both teams will lay it all on the line.
Washington’s postseason success is due to its elite scoring depth which consists of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov. During the regular season, Ovechkin led the team in points with 87 and had an astonishing 49 goals in 82 games. During the playoffs, Ovechkin has continued to score regularly and has 12 goals in just 20 playoff games. Backstrom missed part of the playoffs due to injuries but has managed to average over one point per game in 16 playoff games. Kuznetsov has been phenomenal this postseason and leads the team in points with 24. If the Capitals plan on winning this game, all three of them will need to be at their best.
In game one, Ovechkin and Kuznetsov each had an assist on the team’s fourth goal. However, these two failed to make an impact throughout the rest of the contest. The fact that Washington was able to score three other goals without any contribution from Ovechkin and/or Kuznetsov is a good sign moving forward. With their goal scoring abilities, expect Ovechkin and Kuznetsov to be a lot more aggressive in game two.
apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, ‘Helvetica Neue’, sans-serif;”>Vegas’ success has been due to its star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. Since it is Vegas’ first official season in the NHL, the organization partook in an expansion draft during the offseason. In the draft, Vegas decided to take goalie Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team hoped that he would carry it to a potential playoff berth. Since joining Vegas, Fleury has been godly. This season, Fleury went 29-13-4 with a 2.24 goals against average. However, he has been even better in the playoffs. In 16 starts, Fleury is 13-3 with a 1.81 goals against average. Fleury also has had four shutouts already this postseason and will look for a bounce back performance after giving up four goals in game one. Expect Fleury to play a lot better on Wednesday night as a result.
As for my prediction, I have to side with the Knights. Vegas has a tremendous home ice advantage and has used it throughout the whole season. Vegas went 29-10-2 at home this season and I expect the T-Mobile Arena to be rocking on Wednesday. I think that the game will be really close but I think that Fleury will play a lot better as he carries the Golden Knights to a commanding 2-0 series lead.
