Starting today and for the next two days, the best spellers from around the world will gather for the 2018 version of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This will be the 91st edition of the competition, which has grown in capacity and popularity over the past half-century. Looking ahead at this year’s event, it will be the 25th year that ESPN has wall to wall coverage shown around the country.
ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and the ESPN App will combine to present more than 24 live hours of the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee ESPN’s Matt Barrie will host the 91st Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee alongside 1990 finalist, Paul Loeffler.
A time-honored tradition, the Scripps National Spelling Bee will have its most competitors in its history. 516 spellers will descend upon National Harbor, Maryland with the dream to be deemed the greatest speller on the planet. The spellers for this year’s event come from all around the 50 states and range from eight to 15 years of age.
The preliminaries take place today and end tomorrow morning. If you’re looking for the finals of the event, they begin on May 31 starting at 10 a.m. The closing portion of the competition will take place later that night at 8:30 p.m.
