Tuesday, May 15 marks the start of the 2018 Ramadan season, which will end the evening of Thursday, June 14. Marking a season of prayer, fasting and self-discipline. That said, a lot of observers still like to joke about their shared experiences while honoring the holiday, as well as jokes about what people might not realize about the holiday. Ramadan, also known as “Ramzan,” “Ramadhan,” or “Ramathan,” is often referred to as a “holiday,” but the observance actually lasts a month and is in itself the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. No matter how it is spelled, however, the name translates to “heat” or “dryness,” reflecting a time of discipline for the Muslim people.
Honoring the first time the Koran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad, it is one of the holiest times of the year for the Muslim people and the season is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
Adult observers are obliged to fast during daylight hours. There are a few exceptions, such as the ill; elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or menstruating; depending on the circumstances, some are excused entirely while others are expected to make up their fast at a later date. Children who have not reached puberty are not obliged to fast but many do so to help prepare for when they are older.
Keep in mind that the fast only takes place during daylight; when the sun’s not out, people can and will eat. A pre-dawn meal that takes places before the fast is called the “suhur;” a meal that takes place after sunset that breaks the fast is called the “iftar,” according to The Sun.
Ramadan ends with the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which also marks the beginning of the next lunar month.
UPDATE: According to Gulf News, due to moon-sighting methodology, Ramadan will officially begin this upcoming Thursday, May 17.
