The first-round of the 2018 NFL draft has concluded, and what a thrilling opening night it was. Not only was history made for the 32 players selected but NFL history, in general, occurred.
The night started off with a bang as the most polarizing player in this year’s draft, Baker Mayfield, was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick. Quarterbacks became a common theme early in the first round. The New York Jets selected Sam Darnold third, Josh Allen to the Bills at seven, and Arizona Cardinals traded up to put Josh Rosen out of his green room misery with the tenth overall pick. It became the first time in NFL history four quarterbacks were selected within the first ten picks. Overall, five quarterbacks got chosen in the first round with Baltimore trading back into the first round at 32 to select Lamar Jackson. It’s fitting that the first-round opened with a QB and end with a QB.
Quarterbacks were not the only ones making history during the first round. Two brothers, Tremaine and Terrelle Edmunds, became the first set of brothers drafted in the first round, of the same draft. Tremaine went 16th overall to the Buffalo Bills, while Terrelle had to wait around until the Pittsburgh Steelers scooped him up with the 28th pick.
Another common theme throughout the first round, the presence of the two teams from this year’s college football national championship game. Seven of the first 32 picks came from either Alabama or Georgia. In all, the SEC had 10 of the 32 first-round picks, which led all conferences.
Now that we have covered the main storylines let’s take a look at how Twitter exploded.
