Since so much has been made about David Hogg’s admission (or rejection) from various universities, one PR-savvy school has decided to step in and make it easier for everyone involved: New Mexico State University has offered admission to Hogg and all of the survivors of the deadly Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
According to TMZ, Dr. Miriam S. Chaiken, the Dean of the Honors College at New Mexico State University, has invited Hogg and the rest of the Parkland student advocates to attend New Mexico State. In a letter obtained by TMZ, Dr. Chaiken said that she has been inspired by Hogg’s “gun control advocacy and leadership.”
“Please tell David, Emma (Gonzalez), and any other of your student leaders, that they are welcome at the William Conroy Honors College and at New Mexico State University,” the letter states. “I can assure them that they will be admitted to our university, and I will personally make it my commitment to raise as much funding as I can to support them with scholarships.”
The discussion about Hogg’s acceptance into college began after Fox News TV host Laura Ingraham mentioned Hogg on Twitter to mock his college rejections. “David Hogg Rejected By Four Colleges To Which He Applied and whines about it. (Dinged by UCLA with a 4.1 GPA…totally predictable given acceptance rates.)” Ingraham tweeted on Wednesday, March 28.
While the exact details of the students’ admissions are unclear, the university seems to be offering them free rides. In addition to New Mexico State University, Hogg also has been accepted at Cal Poly, Cal State San Marcos, and Florida Atlantic University.
On February 14, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed and seventeen more were wounded by Nikolas Cruz, making it one of the world’s deadliest school massacres.
