In yet another twist in the bizarre, unending Ball family saga, middle son LiAngelo today declared for the 2018 NBA Draft. LiAngelo, with his brother LaMelo and big mouthed papa Lavar, has been living in Lithuania where he and his brother are playing in that countries basketball league for Vytautas Prienu in a small city called Prienai. To this point, LiAngelo has averaged 15.6 points in what is considered by many a lesser European league. Making an NBA team will be an uphill climb for Ball, whose older brother Lonzo if finishing up his rookie year with the Los Angeles Lakers after being selected second overall in the 2017 draft.
It’s been a tumultuous year for LiAngelo. He was hardly a normal, run of the mill three-star recruit coming out of high school, thanks to his controversially clownish father and famous older brother. Like Lonzo, LiAngelo enrolled in UCLA. Not that long into the season, LiAngelo and two teammates named Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested during a team trip in China for shoplifting sunglasses.
In typical Ball style, the arrests caused an international incident only relinquishing when the United States government asked for the players’ release from Chinese prison as a favor. When LiAngelo, Riley, and Hill returned to California they were suspended indefinitely. In response, Lavar yanked LiAngelo off the team and out of UCLA. As Lonzo adjusted to life in the NBA, the rest of the Ball family headed off for the pastures of Lithuania.
Many draft pundits do not believe that Ball will be drafted. Nonetheless, it has been reported that he will work out for “several” teams. He’s shot the ball quite well in the nine games he’s played in for Vytautas Prienu, averaging three three-pointers a game on forty-five percent shooting. One potential destination for LiAngelo that has been floated by many is the Los Angeles Lakers. Lavar infamously stated that he would make sure Lonzo left the legendary franchise if his brothers were not signed. How seriously the Lakers will take that threat is unclear, but it is entirely plausible that at a minimum they will throw a training camp invite to Liangelo.
