The Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of Louisiana Monroe has been suspended due to a “new member” incident. ULM announced on Monday, March 12, that the Eta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha has been temporarily suspended after a reported “new member incident.”

According to reports, the incident allegedly took place at a fraternity new member event which was held at an off-campus location.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

ULM Vice President for Student Affairs Camille Currier said, “The Pike Chapter has cooperated fully with the investigation, which is ongoing. According to Pike social media pages, there are 106 members and two houses on campus.

The students living at the houses may remain until the end of the semester, but will need to find new housing over the semester break, according to Currier. A hearing on the matter is pending.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.
