If you thought our nation’s political parties were in shambles, John Oliver was kind enough to enlighten us to the shit show that’s currently unfolding in Italy.
According to the Last Week Tonight segment, Italy is currently going through a tumultuous election period that has coincided with a rise in fascism and fake news.
Running for Prime Minister is Luigi Di Maio, a newcomer who Oliver describes as being “a year younger than Frankie Muniz.” There is far-right candidate Matteo Salvini, whom Oliver calls a “fascist Mary Poppins, so basically, Mary Poppins.” And then there is former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who despite being convicted of tax fraud and cannot run for office until 2019, is leading in the polls.
So, given the current state of Italy’s political climate, Oliver, who is not an Italian citizen, consulted his lawyers about the logistics of him throwing his name into the Prime Minister ring.
And as it turns out, there are no laws in the Italian constitution barring Oliver from running, or as he likes to call it, “Air Bud Rules”.

Under Italian law, the government coalition can pick a non-politician to run, and given that Oliver can make a legitimate case for being their best option, maybe they’ll select him as that non-politician.
