Nyong’o was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents, Dorothy and Peter. She actually holds dual Kenyan-Mexican citizenship. Her family moved back to Kenya when she was less than a year old, and she spent most of her life there. She did spend some time back in Mexico as a teenager and while there, learned Spanish. In 2013, Nyong’o landed her breakthrough role, being cast in director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. She earned rave reviews for her performance as Patsey, a slave working on a plantation in 18th century Louisiana. She was nominated for numerous awards for the role, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild award, and an Oscar. She would win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, one of only 15 actresses to win an Oscar in their debut role. She was also just the sixth black actress to win the award and the first African to win it.
