The Early Years

Nyong’o was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents, Dorothy and Peter. She actually holds dual Kenyan-Mexican citizenship. Her family moved back to Kenya when she was less than a year old, and she spent most of her life there. She did spend some time back in Mexico as a teenager and while there, learned Spanish. She made her acting debut when she was 14-years-old, starring as Juliet in a Kenyan production of Romeo and Juliet. From there, she knew that acting was in her future and she went on to graduate with a degree in theatre and film studies from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Nyong’o started her career in film by working on the production crew for several films, learning the trade from actors such as Ralph Fiennes, who was the star of The Constant Gardener, one of the films Nyong’o worked on. From there, she starred in a short film called East River before eventually moving back to Kenya. While back home, she would work in the Kenyan film and television industry, starring in a TV series as well as directing a documentary, In My Genes, and a music video, which won an MTV Africa award.

In 2013, Nyong’o landed her breakthrough role, being cast in director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. She earned rave reviews for her performance as Patsey, a slave working on a plantation in 18th century Louisiana. She was nominated for numerous awards for the role, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild award, and an Oscar. She would win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, one of only 15 actresses to win an Oscar in their debut role. She was also just the sixth black actress to win the award and the first African to win it.
She went on to snag roles in the Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop and also in the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. She did the motion capture and voice for Maz Kanata, a role which she wanted because it was something new and a challenge that she was more than willing to take on.

In 2016, she would record the voice for Raksha, a mother wolf, in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. Following that, she would reprise her role as Maz Kanata in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Her latest film, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther saw her co-star as Nakia, a member of a top-secret, all-female spy force for the fictional nation of Wakanda. The film has been a box office smash, and Nyong’o has earned rave reviews for her performance.
She has recently announced that she is breaking into writing and is working on developing a new TV series that she will produce and star in. In addition, she will star in the horror-romance film Little Monsters, written and directed by Abe Forsythe.

Lupita impressed the fashion-gurus once again with her innovative and interesting style at the Screen Actors Guild Awards as she slayed the crowd with her box braids complementing her outfit.
