She made her acting debut when she was 14-years-old, starring as Juliet in a Kenyan production of Romeo and Juliet. From there, she knew that acting was in her future and she went on to graduate with a degree in theatre and film studies from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Nyong’o started her career in film by working on the production crew for several films, learning the trade from actors such as Ralph Fiennes, who was the star of The Constant Gardener, one of the films Nyong’o worked on. From there, she starred in a short film called East River before eventually moving back to Kenya. While back home, she would work in the Kenyan film and television industry, starring in a TV series as well as directing a documentary, In My Genes, and a music video, which won an MTV Africa award.

She was also just the sixth black actress to win the award and the first African to win it.
She went on to snag roles in the Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop and also in the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. She did the motion capture and voice for Maz Kanata, a role which she wanted because it was something new and a challenge that she was more than willing to take on.
