With a bit of international background, McHale was born in Rome, Italy, to an American father and a Canadian mother, and is of Irish and Norwegian ancestry. He grew up in Seattle, Washington, and spent a few years in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Returning to Washington state, he attended Mercer Island High School.
