The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the second season of the hit FX anthology series American Crime Story premieres tonight on FX at 10 PM EST.
The show, which will consist of 9 episodes and is based on Maureen Orth’s book “Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U. S. History”, will delve into the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
Following a successful first season of The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, The Assassination of Gianni Versace is supposedly a worthy successor, currently holding 84% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a general review that reads:
“The Assassination of Versace starts with a bang and unfurls slowly, moving backward through an intricate (and occasionally convoluted) murder mystery anchored by a career-defining performance from Darren Criss.”
The Assassination of Gianni Versace stars Édgar Ramírez as Gianni Versace, Darren Criss (who is receiving rave reviews) as Andrew Cunanan, Ricky Martin as Antonio D’Amico, and Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace. The premiere episode, which aires tonight on FX at 10 PM EST, was directed by series creator Ryan Murphy.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Reviews
Slate: “[Darren] Criss’ performance is so good that it upends The Assassination of Gianni Versace: Where Cuba Gooding Jr.’s lackluster performance pushed O.J. to the margins of his own story, Criss, aided by scripts, pushes everyone else aside.”
indieWire: “Edgar Ramirez makes for a commanding Versace, exuding confidence in a largely quiet depiction, and yet his understated turn doesn’t undermine later scenes where Gianni is scared.”
USA Today: “Versace will inevitably be compared to People v. O.J., so it’s better that it stands apart from the earlier Emmy-winning chapter. What it does well, it does extremely well, and its mix of beauty and horror will stick with you long after its episodes conclude. ”
Uproxx: “Cunanan’s just not interesting enough to support so much screen time, especially because we don’t really get to understand what makes him tick until the story’s nearly over.”
NPR: “This new series is still well worth watching. Murphy’s at his best when he takes tabloid material and, without draining away its juiciness, reframes it to grapple with serious issues.”
