In the third weekend of bowl games, there is a game between two elite opponents. These teams are the Miami Hurricanes and the Wisconsin Badgers. Both teams had above average expectations this season but managed to exceed those expectations by winning at least ten games and by qualifying for a phenomenal bowl game. However, both teams had the opportunity to play in an even better bowl game had they won their conference championships. Either teams might have even qualified for the college football playoff had either team been able to win their conference’s title game. Now, both teams will look to prove that they are truly elite by winning this bowl game.
The Miami Hurricanes entered the season with several question marks. The largest issue was the departure of starting quarterback Brad Kaaya. Kaaya, in his college career, had 69 touchdown passes and over 9,000 yards passing. Replacing him was going to be extremely difficult for the Hurricanes until they stumbled upon junior quarterback Malik Rosier. This season, Rosier threw for 25 touchdown and over 2,900 passing yards along with 11 interception. His mobility and throwing accuracy are a lethal combo that helps keep defenses on their toes whenever he touches the ball. However, Rosier struggled down the stretch and was a huge reason why the Hurricanes lost to Pittsburgh and Clemson in the final two games of the season. If Miami plans on winning this game, Rosier will need to play extremely well against Wisconsin’s elite defense.
Wisconsin’s success so far this season is due, in large part, to freshman running back Jonathan Taylor. Taylor has looked amazing this season with 1,847 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns. Taylor entered the season behind both Bradrick Shaw and Chris James on the depth chart but became the undisputed starter after his amazing 223 yard performance against Florida Atlantic back in early September. Taylor’s success has also led to more opportunities in the passing game for quarterback Alex Hornibrook via play-action passes which might lead to some big passing plays against Miami.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Miami. Although I think that Wisconsin is a better all-around team, this is basically a home game for the Hurricanes. I expect the stadium to be filled with Hurricanes fans as Miami forces Alex Hornibrook into multiple turnovers. I expect Rosier to play better due to the extra time off as he leads the Hurricanes to a victory.
