Apatow got his start in show business as a writer for the Grammy Awards. He later appeared on HBO’s 15th Annual Young Comedians Special. His first taste of success started when he co-created and executive produced The Ben Stiller Show, which earned him critical acclaim and an Emmy despite the show being canceled after only one season. He also earned six Emmy nominations for his work on HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show.
He wrote the 1995 comedy film Heavyweights and re-wrote numerous films, such as Liar Liar, Happy Gillmore, and The Wedding Singer (though all uncredited).
In 1999, he founded Apatow Productions and went on to become a Hollywood comedy juggernaut. That year, he also executive produced the cult classic teen-comedy drama known as Freaks and Geeks.

Most recently, Apatow produced the 2017 romantic comedy film The Big Sick, which earned over $55 million worldwide, becoming one of the top-grossing independent films of the year.
