After both teams were handed their first Big Ten loss this past weekend, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Michigan State Spartans are both hungry for a victory. The favorite here is no surprise as Penn State has gone the majority of the season undefeated behind their rushing threat in Saquon Barkley. The college star continues to make a bid for a first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft as he comes into this matchup already over 800 yards on the season along with 9 touchdowns.
In a triple-overtime heartbreaker, the Spartans fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 39-38 in their last game. After a game-winning touchdown by the Wildcats, Spartans quarterback, Brian Lewerke tossed a long interception into the arms of the Northwestern secondary. This was only his fourth interception on the year- one less than Nitanny Lions’ QB, Trace McSorely. Lewerke currently has 14 touchdowns with 1,807 passing yards. Barkley’s opposing running back next weekend, LJ Scott has about only half of his yards and TDs.
As for the Lions, they dropped their last game to their conference rival, Ohio State in a matchup that saw Urban Meyer outcoaching the lesser experienced head coach in James Franklin. However, with the roster that Franklin has under him, there should not be too many troubles ahead. What the Buckeyes did successfully was slow down Barkley, holding him to 44 yards with just one touchdown. This is a feat that many teams are not too capable of achieving, especially a No. 16 Michigan State. Aside from their the run, the Lions should be looking to make good use of their passing game against a Spartans team that is averaging 193.6 passing yards allowed per game.
