Georgia Tech University has erupted into protests following the death of 21-year-old gender non-binary student Scout Schultz.
Early Sunday morning, Scout Schultz, a 21-year-old Georgia Tech student who identified as gender non-binary, was shot and killed by Georgia Tech police officer.
Schultz, 21, was shot and killed after she walked towards police officers shouting, “Shoot me!” Schultz’s parents have hired trial attorney L. Chris Stewart, claiming that their child did not have to die if police used de-escalating tactics and non-lethal measures.
Footage of the incident shows Schultz walking toward police officers and shouting, “Shoot me!” An officer responds, “Nobody wants to hurt you.” Schultz pauses briefly, then takes three steps forward before being shot once and falling to the ground. Schultz later died at a hospital. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said that three suicide notes were found in Schultz’s dorm room.
Now, just days later, the Georgia Tech campus has broken out into protests.

Three people were arrested Monday night during a protest after a vigil for a Georgia Tech student who was fatally shot by campus police, a university spokesman said.
Georgia Tech sent out alerts urging students to shelter indoors Monday night and lock doors and windows because of violent protests. Video posted on social media showed a police vehicle burning in the street and officers pinning people to the ground as onlookers shouted at them.
After a peaceful vigil, about 50 protesters marched to the campus police department, university spokesman Lance Wallace said. A police vehicle was damaged and two officers suffered minor injuries, with one taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police restored order relatively quickly, and three people were arrested and charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer, Wallace said.
None of the involved police officers have been identified and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the shooting.
