She joined the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble and was later nominated for five Joseph Jefferson awards and won three for best supporting actress. She’s appeared in multiple productions throughout the years, including Charley’s Aunt, The Philanthropist, Extremities (alongside Susan Sarandon), and Balm in Gilead, among others.

Her film career took off in 1988, as she was cast in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels alongside Steve Martin and Michael Caine. That year, she was given the title: Most Promising New Actress by the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Heady’s next big role was Tess Trueheart in the 1990 action comedy film Dick Tracy.

In 1991, she starred in the dramatic mystery thriller Moral Thoughts, alongside Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. A year later, she met her future husband Byron McCulloch in Canada on the set of Ordinary Magic. She married McCulloch on August 25, 1993.

She had previously married actor John Malkovich in 1982, but divorced him in 1988 after he had an affair with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Heady has been nominated for two Emmy Awards for the television movies Lonesome Dove (1989) and Bastard Out of Carolina (1996). Each time, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special.

Glenne appeared as Dr. Abby Keaton on the NBC medical drama ER from 1996 to 1997. She later co-starred in another NBC series Encore! Encore! All the while, Heady still kept her career alive on the stage in the productions of Aunt Dan and Lemon, Detachments, My Brilliant Divorce, and The Guys.

From 2003 to 2006, Heady played the role of Karen in the comedy-drama, detective series Monk. In 2004, she co-starred in the film Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, alongside Lindsay Lohan. Over the years, she’s appeared in numerous movies, including The Amateurs, The Namesake, Comeback Season, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, and much more.

Glenne Heady passed away on Friday, June 9th, 2017. She was set to appear on the Hulu series Futureman, but died before the series could wrap up filming. She will only appear in five of the planned thirteen episodes. Heady’s final appearance on film will be in an upcoming action-comedy film Villa Capri.
