We have a new president in France! The right-wing wave of political power may have died down somewhat with the election of Emmanuel Macron as President of France today.
Macron was going up against right-wing, nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen. We saw yuge right-wing takeovers in the political systems of many powerful nations, from England’s Brexit to the United States’ election of the outspoken Donald Trump.
Today, most of the citizens from France pushed back against the far right and welcomed in a more centralist candidate.

If elected president, Le Pen promised to withdraw France from the European Union. She stoked nationalistic fervor among supporters. But that wasn’t enough to defeat Macron on this day of ultimate decision.
Once the polls closed in France, CNNThe New York Times and showed the world that this central-thinker defeated Le Pen by double digits.
Le Pen earned 34.5% of the vote, while Macron won the election with 65.5% of the voting public.

Who the heck is Emmanuel Macron?
At 39 years old, Emmanuel is the youngest president in the history of France. He was endorsed by former US President Barrack Obama. Macron is a former investment banker and is, now, the current President-elect of France. In November 2016, Macron announced his bid for president under the banner of En Marche! He was a member of the Socialist Party from 2006 to 2009.
Macron was appointed as Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs in 2014. He holds a master’s degree in public affairs at the Paris Institute of Political Science. He is set to be sworn in as President of France on May 17th, 2017.
