We’ve got an absolutely fantastic ball game on tap for tonight, as the New York Yankees (12-7) will take on the Boston Red Sox (11-9) in a battle of aces. It will be Masahiro Tanaka vs. Chris Sale in the latest chapter of the fiercest rivalry in the MLB. Getcha popcorn ready!
Tanaka baffled hitters in his first three seasons in the majors, going 39-16 with a 3.12 ERA over 490 innings. But the 28-year-old righty is off to a slow start this year, as he’s posted a 2-1 record in four outings with a 6.00 ERA and 1.67 WHIP while striking out 19 batters over 21 innings. The 2014 All-Star was sharp in his last start, though, picking up the win after holding the Chicago White Sox to one run on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters over seven innings.
The move from the AL Central to the AL East hasn’t been a problem for Sale in the slightest. The 28-year-old southpaw has been mowing down hitters like crazy through his first four starts, going 1-1 with a microscopic 0.91 ERA and 0.71 WHIP while striking out 42 batters over 29.2 innings. The five-time All-Star might finally get that elusive Cy Young Award in 2017.
