Of all the matchups in the first round of the NBA playoffs, this series should feature by far the most defensive minded basketball. This season, the San Antonio Spurs were second in the NBA in scoring defense (98.1 points per game), while the Memphis Grizzlies were third (100.0 points per game).
The Spurs earned the two-seed in the Western Conference after going 61-21 in the regular season. San Antonio is lead by Kawhi Leonard, who is on the very short list of best two-way players in the league. Leonard made his second straight All-Star team with averages of 25.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.

Memphis locked up the seven-seed in the West with a 43-39 record in the regular season. This is the Grizzlies’ seventh straight playoff appearance, and they are still backed by the usual trio of Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, and Zach Randolph. Their championship window most likely closed years ago, but you can guarantee that they will still give the Spurs everything they got.
In last year’s playoffs, these teams met in the first round in the same #2-seed/#7-seed matchup, and the Spurs swept the Grizzlies 4-0. But on a positive note for Memphis, they did split their regular season series against the Spurs 2-2, with the home team winning every game.
