Today is Good Friday, now go think about how much of a dirty little sinner you are!

Ever wonder what the deal behind Good Friday is? Well, it’s a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary (not one of humanity’s finest moments, regardless of your faith). Don’t worry about Jesus though, in the end he made it out of the tomb just fine (whoops, spoiler alert!) It is also observed on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday and often coincides with the Jewish holiday of Passover (as the only Jew in my fraternity, I insisted we celebrate “Eastover” every year).
To be honest, I’ve always thought that the death of Jesus was always a weird thing to “celebrate” but hey, there’s a lot of things I don’t understand about religion. That’s a topic for another day though.
Good Friday is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday. Basically, it’s got as many names as Daenerys Targaryen.
The day is widely considered a legal holiday in many national governments around the world, including most Western countries. Here in America, 12 states recognize Good Friday as a holiday. They are Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky (half day), Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. In these states, government offices and courts are closed, as well as some banks and postal offices.
For all you finance Bros out there, the stock markets are also closed on Good Friday…(wait for it), BUT the foreign exchange and bond trading markets open for a partial business day in case you’re trying to get your Wolf of Wall Street on. Public schools and universities are also often closed on Good Friday, but that sometimes coincides with spring break.
