Dustin Johnson is currently ranked the number one golfer in the world, and he was one of the favorites to win the 2017 edition of the Masters. I say that he was one of the favorites to win the most coveted major because he suffered a strange injury on Wednesday and is now questionable to compete. Here’s Golf Digest with the scoop.
“At roughly 3:00 pm today, Dustin took a serious fall on a staircase in his Augusta rental home,” the statement read. “He landed very hard on his lower back and is now resting, although quite uncomfortably. He has been advised to remain immobile and begin a regimen of anti-inflammatory medication and icing, with the hope of being able to play tomorrow.”
Johnson, the reigning U.S. Open champion, has won three straight starts dating back to the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club and had his best Masters finish last year when he was T-4. He was scheduled to be honored for his 2016 season by the Golf Writers Association of America at its annual awards dinner Wednesday night.
Johnson is playing in Thursday’s final group, which will give him a little extra time to recover. He is scheduled to tee off with Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker at 2:03 p.m. ET.
There’s no good time to fall down a flight of stairs, but just a day before the biggest golf tournament of the year has to be the absolute worst. It’s a huge bummer for Johnson, but at least there are some silver linings to this news. Smartasses on Twitter have been firing off tons of quality jokes, and Dustin now has a great excuse to get a very thorough back rub from Paulina.
