The finale of the nationally televised Monday slate of Opening Day games is an AL West showdown between the Los Angeles Angeles and Oakland Athletics. Both of these teams are looking to bounce back from disappointing 2016 campaigns, as the Angels finished in fourth place with a 74-88 record and the A’s went 69-93 to end up in the cellar.
Ricky Nolasco will take the ball for the Angels, and he’ll try to build on his strong finish to the 2016 season. Last year, the righty posted an ugly 5.13 ERA over 21 stars with the Minnesota Twins. But thankfully for Nolasco, he became a different pitcher after the Angels traded for him. In his 11 stars with the Angels, the 34-year-old went 4-6 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 51 batters over 73 innings.
Toeing the rubber for the A’s will be Kendall Graveman. The 26-year-old righty was solid last season, going 10-11 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while striking out 108 batters over 186 innings. Graveman has a career ERA of 4.08 in 306.1 big league innings.
