A nine-year-old Arizona boy has died after being shot by his two-year-old brother, who was playing with a loaded gun left on the bed by their mother.
What Happened?
Wendy Lavarnia, 28, has been arrested along with husband Kansas, 31. Wendy is facing four counts of child endangerment after her nine-year-old son, Landen, was shot in the head by his younger brother. Landen was put on life support but died early Tuesday morning.
The AZ Central reports that Wendy had previously allowed her youngest child to “practice pulling the trigger” in their home in Phoenix, Arizona, when the weapon was unloaded. She claims she was retrieving a holster for the gun when her youngest son began playing with the weapon, which she left on the bed.
Via AZ Central:
The boy was found shot at a residence in the 3500 block of Rosewood Avenue, which is just north of Cactus Road, said Phoenix police Sgt. Vince Lewis. Officials received a call about 3 p.m. from the home. Lewis said three other children also were in the house at the time of the shooting, as well as the boy’s mother.
The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation, including who pulled the trigger, Lewis said. The investigation has not ruled out the possibility the shooting was accidental, he said.
Kansas Lavernia was not in the house at the time of the incident but is facing charges for the possession of a gun as a felon.
