Jerry Krause, who took over as the Chicago Bulls general manager in 1985, has died at age 77.
The Bulls confirmed his death on Tuesday. The legendary GM and Chicago native was a polarizing figure in the Windy City thanks to his major success and failures with the Bulls.
Krause is largely credited with putting many of the pieces around Michael Jordan that led to six championships during the 1990s. While he often spoke to the media and was responsible for a great many quotes, two truly stand above the rest from his time as an NBA shot caller.
Krause made the bold decision to hire Phil Jackson despite the successful tenure of former head coach Doug Collins, who led the team to the Eastern Conference finals in 1988-89.
Krause also worked out a 1987 draft day trade to acquire Scottie Pippen and drafted Horace Grant.
Though he was named NBA executive of the year two separate times, Krause was also blamed for the crumbling of the franchise in the post-Michael Jordan error.
