Marquette’s Golden Eagles will be invading Gamecock territory in the first round tournament of March Madness. The South Carolina Gamecocks haven’t been looking so hot, as they’ve lost five out of their last seven games. But still, South Carolina has had an overall better season than Marquette. And they’ll have the home-team advantage to turn around their recent slump.
The Golden Eagles need to focus on their strengths (three-pointers), as well as the other’s team strengths. The Gamecocks possess the SEC Player of the Year. Their guard Sindarius Thornwell is a powerhouse on the basketball court, averaging 21 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game. On February 7th, he sank 44 shots against the Alabama Crimson Tide. And on January 21, Thornwell scored 34 points against the Kentucky Wildcats.
Marquette is looking to overcome a slump of their own. They were knocked out of the Big East Tournament early on against Seton Hall. And last Saturday, they were totally annihilated by the Georgetown Hoyas, who handily defeated Marquette by 18 points.
But when the Golden Eagles are sinking three-pointers, they’re hard to put down. Marquette is currently the number one team in the league when it comes to three-point shooting. However, they allow an average of 75 points per game. Can they defeat the Gamecocks, a team that is currently on a two-game losing streak?
