Director James Gunn is busy promoting his latest directorial effort, The Belko Experiment, which opens this weekend. During a press stop with Complex, Gunn spoke about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and what lies ahead for the franchise. He noted that Vol. 2 is a “self-enclosed story” and Marvel did not force him to fit into their Phase Four plan.
However, we know that the Guardians will be connected to Phase Four and that they will also be making an appearance in Infinity War. While Gunn said the Guardians will be “an integral” part of the movie, he also hinted that they won’t have a ton of screen time.
Given that, fans are naturally interested in how Infinity War may set up a potential Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn confirmed that there will most definitely be a threequel in the series, but that he doesn’t know if he’ll be the one directing it.
“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”
This comes as a disappointment as the first Guardians is one of the more original offerings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Vol. 2 looks to be very much in the same vein. Hopefully, Gunn chooses to stay in this sandbox. If he doesn’t which director would you like to see take on the franchise?
