The University of Minnesota has become the latest American college to get rid of the classic homecoming king and queen, and is replacing them with “gender-neutral royals.”
UM officials are calling it a move toward “gender inclusivity” that promotes “a spirit of inclusion.” According to the university, this change allows the school to select the best student representatives for the U of M based on campus and community involvement, regardless of gender.
Like years past, UM will name 10 students to Homecoming court, except the mix won’t necessarily be five men and five women. Those 10 will then be paired at random to compete in homecoming events. Their performance, in addition to a university-wide vote, will determine the two royals.

In an effort toward gender inclusivity, Student Unions and Activities has changed the titles of Homecoming “King and Queen” to the gender-neutral “Royalty.” We wish to promote a spirit of inclusion at the University of Minnesota. This change allows the University to select the best student representatives for the U of M based on campus and community involvement — regardless of gender. What in the past would have been called “King” and “Queen” will now be called “Royals” and can be any combination of any gender identity.

The Homecoming Royalty positions are very prestigious. As ambassadors and stewards of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Royalty will represent the University on campus and at a variety of external events such as the State Fair. Court Members also participate in various competitions in the months leading up to Homecoming for a chance to win the Royalty title. The opportunity to serve as the University’s ambassadors of school spirit and pride is very rewarding. The two students who win the Royalty title will also be rewarded with a scholarship!
Being crowned as Royalty allows you to embody the true meaning of a being Gopher: a student who respectfully represents the University’s values, connects with the diverse members of the University community, and has excellent school pride.
