In case you live under a rock, the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons both advanced to the Super Bowl yesterday, and you know what that means? No football for a week, but no matter because that gives us more time to watch college basketball, and tonight we get a classic ACC matchup as NC State heads to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on Duke.
After losing two straight games against ranked opponents, the Blue Devils bounced back nicely on Saturday night with a win against the Miami Hurricanes by a score of 70-58. By now, everyone knows that head coach Mike Krzyzewski is not on the sidelines for Duke as he is recovering from back surgery, which put assistant coach Jeff Capel at the helm. Although they haven’t been great in ACC play so far this year, going 3-3, Duke is still 15-4 on the season, and well positioned to make the tournament in March. Unfortunately for Duke, it hasn’t been their play that’s been talked about this season, it’s junior guard Grayson Allen not being able to contain himself from tripping players and shoving coaches. Say what you will about him, but Allen is a really good player and will need to get his emotions under control if he wants to help lead the Blue Devils to a deep postseason run.
Things have not been going so well for the Wolfpack as of late. Up until the past week or so, NC State was sitting at 12-3 on the season, but after losing four of their last five games, they’ve fallen to 13-7 on the season, and 2-5 in ACC play. Freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. has led the way for NC State this season, scoring 18.9 points a game, and the team will need him to have a big game tonight if they want any chance at pulling off the upset and saving their season. It will be an interesting one for sure, so tune in tonight to see who comes out on top.
