The No. 5 Big 10 Champion Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2) take on the No. 9 USC Trojans (9-3) in the 103rd Rose Bowl Game tonight. This year’s Rose Bowl features a matchup of two of the hottest teams in the country. The Trojans started the 2016 season 1–2. USC head coach Clay Helton then promoted redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Darnold to the starting line-up. While USC lost Darnold’s first start, they won their next eight games to close out the season. Penn State head coach James Franklin was never in jeopardy of losing his job, but his team was pegged to finish fourth in the stacked Big Ten West and expected to lose 4–6 games after suffering a heartbreaker against Pitt and a shellacking at the hands of Michigan.
As for Penn State, they were projected to finish fourth in the Big Ten West. It looked as mediocrity was their fate after beginning the season at 2-2. After getting drubbed by Michigan 49-10 in the fourth game of the season, PSU ripped off 9 straight wins to finish the season 11-2. As Big 10 Champions, many would argue that it should have been James Franklin’s Nittany Lions in the College Football Playoffs instead of Ohio State.
