SAG Awards 2017 Predictions: Who's Going To Win?

The award show carousel of this week continues as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations were just released today. As I said in my Golden Globes piece earlier this week, I’m a HUGE award show guy, but only really when it comes to movies. Both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards are essentially the same to me in terms of importance, which means they are both kind of important but not nearly important as the Oscars. Anyway, I watch the SAG Awards strictly for the movie categories because I don’t really give a shit about the television categories to be totally honest (sorry television), so like I did with the Golden Globes, I’m going to predict who is going to win each of the major movie categories. Your winners for the 2017 SAG Awards will be…

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Casey AffleckManchester by the Sea (Winner)
Andrew GarfieldHacksaw Ridge
Ryan GoslingLa La Land
Viggo MortensenCaptain Fantastic
Denzel WashingtonFences
As much as I want my man-crush Ryan Gosling to take home the award, it’s all about Affleck here. I said in my Golden Globes piece that this award season is all about Affleck and his performance of a lifetime in Manchester by the Sea. I think he wins at the Golden Globes, wins at the SAG Awards, and will eventually take home the Oscar. If he somehow doesn’t win, which I don’t see happening, look for Denzel to come out a winner.

Natalie PortmanJackie (Winner)
Emma Stone La La Land
Meryl StreepFlorence Foster Jenkins
To be completely honest, I don’t feel too great about this prediction because I think it’s a two-horse race between Portman and Stone, but I’m giving the slight edge to Portman here. I love Emma Stone and she was great in La La Land, but Natalie Portman’s performance as Jackie Kennedy is just too good not to be recognizedI could change my mind about this later today, but as I’m writing this now I’m giving the award to Portman.

Jeff BridgesHell or High Water
Hugh GrantFlorence Foster Jenkins
Lucas HedgesManchester by the Sea
Dev PatelLion
This category is actually a pretty loaded field but I think Ali has to be the frontrunner here. Although he’s not in Moonlight for the entire movie, the scenes he is in are absolutely fantastic, and I think they’ll be enough to get him the SAG award, and possibly the Oscar. I want to give it to Lucas Hedges, but he wasn’t nominated for the Golden Globe, and it seems like younger actors don’t receive awards until later on in their career. After his performance in Manchester by the Sea, he should be around for a while.

Nicole KidmanLion
Octavia SpencerHidden Figures
Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea
I can actually see any one of these women taking home the award, but when it’s all said and done, I think Viola Davis will be the winner. They all gave outstanding performances, but the acting display Davis puts on in Fences really is one of the best performances I’ve seen in quite some time, and I think the win here will lead to her eventual Oscar win shortly after.

Moonlight (Winner)
I was close to putting Manchester by the Sea as the winner here, but Moonlight gets the nod. It’s a fantastic movie with great performances given by the entire cast, and usually a win in this category leads to a win in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, so that may also be my pick for when the Oscars roll around. Stay tuned.
