Wake Football Radio Announcer Tommy Elrod Fired After School Learns He Was Leaking Gameplans

In one of the most bizarre sporting scandals in recent memory, Wake Forest announced today that its football radio announcer Tommy Elrod has been fired from IMG Radio and banned from the school’s sporting facilities after it was learned that he had been leaking or attempting to leak the team’s gameplans to opponents for years. The stunning news that Elrod- a former player and assistant coach for the Demon Deacons- betrayed his alma mater has already been given the impeccable name #WakeyLeaks.

The school began a program-wide investigation last month after an equipment manager discovered documents inside Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium — one day before a football game in Louisville — that showed specific Demon Deacons plays.

Elrod played for Wake Forest from 1993-1997 and then worked as an assistant for 11 years. He began calling games at IMG Radio after he wasn’t retained as an assistant when current coach Dave Clawson was hired.

“It’s incomprehensible that a former Wake Forest student-athlete, graduate-assistant, full-time football coach, and current radio analyst for the school would betray his alma mater,” Clawson said a statement following the announcement.

As I’m sure you can imagine, the internet is having a field day with this one. Here’s a sampling of the reaction to #WakeyLeaks.
