New York Assemblyman Bill Nojay, has died in what has been ruled a suicide. Nojay, who was running in a primary Tuesday, shot and killed himself Friday in Rochester. The suicide took place at Riverside Cemetery, under a maple tree that was near the plots of three of his family members. He was 59.
A police officer went to the cemetery at 9:22 a.m. in response to a police call. The responding officer arrived four minutes later and saw Nojay shoot himself, according to Rochester Police.
Nojay was the Republican assemblyman for the 133rd Assembly District which includes parts of Steuben and Monroe counties and all of Livingston County. A longtime politician, he was elected to the Assembly in 2012.
Nojay was due in court upstate Friday morning to turn himself in for fraud charges. A wealthy dentist in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, recently claimed Nojay and three others got her to invest $1 million in a rice exporting company that never opened. Nojay had been doing business in cambodia since the 1980’s.
Nojay is survived by his wife Debra and their three children.
