The United States will play Argentina tonight in Men’s Olympic Basketball at 5:45 P.M. EST, hopefully destroying the Argentinians in the process. Although Team USA certainly hasn’t looked as good as they’re capable of playing, perhaps they’ll use their humiliating defeat in 2004 (the last time they lost an Olympic game) against Argentina as some bulletin board material. I know it’s ten years ago, but it’s still a sore subject among Team USA fans.
Argentina, who began playing somewhat well this tournament, still wound up with the unfortunate luck of playing the USA in the quarterfinals, so we expect their Olympic run to end today. But at least they beat Brazil, right?
Meanwhile, the USA has four players averaging double digits: Kevin Durant (16.8), Carmelo Anthony (15.2), Kyrie Irving (12.6), and Paul George (11.6). But their problem hasn’t been their offense as much as it has been the defense, and inability to stop backdoor cuts/passes.
