Ballers is HBO’s most successful comedy in a decade. This past week, HBO just picked up Ballers for a third season. Not since Entourage has HBO aired a comedy this popular. Which makes sense, considering it’s essentially a sports version of Entourage starring The Rock, so it’s success was virtually built in. The second season premiered on July 17, and is made up of 10, 30-minute episodes.
Ballers tells the story of Spencer Strasmore. According to the Ballers website, Ballers is about Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL star, as he tries to find the same success as a financial manager for current players in sun-splashed Miami. Heeding his boss Joe’s instruction to “monetize his friendships,” Spencer builds a client base of young phenoms and veteran stars alike, but his role in their lives far exceeds money management as he struggles to help them navigate the many traps that come with life as big-time “ballers.”
Season 2 brings back all of it’s season 1 cast members, as well as adding Andy Garcia as the antagonist. Ballers stars Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player turned financial manager, Rob Corddry as Joe Krutel, a financial advisor at Anderson Financial who tries hard to fit in, John David Washington as Ricky Jerret, a highly competitive and spiritual NFL player, Omar Miller as Charles Greane, an affable former NFL player who is searching for his next career, and Andy Garcia, who’s character has been described as a “top dog” in the business.
