The UEFA European Championship, one of the most highly respected soccer tournaments in the world, is nearing it’s end. Due to the concentration of talent in the European nations, the UEFA Euro has been described as the most prestigious tournament in the world. Now, that tournament is down to it’s final three teams: Portugal, who is in the final, France, and Germany.
This year’s European Championship was the largest ever, with an unprecedented field of 24 teams. The previous 14 European Championship tournaments have been won by nine different national teams: Germany and Spain each have won three titles, France has two titles, and Soviet Union, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Denmark and Greece have won one title each.
France, the host nation, won Group A, with victories over Romania and Albania, as well as a tie with Switzerland. In the first fame of the knockout stage, they defeated Ireland, 2-1. Then, in the quarterfinals, they trounced an upstart Iceland team, 5-2. France have been led by 25 year old striker Antoine Griezmann, who has scored a tournament leading four goals so far.
As for Germany, they also won their group, Group C, through victories over Ukraine and Northern Ireland, as well as tying Poland. In the knockout stage, they easily defeated Slovakia 3-0. Then, in the quarterfinals, they narrowly escaped a tough Italian squad in penalty kicks.
The second semi-final game between Germany and France kicks off today at 3 PM EST. The winner will be playing Portugal, who defeated Wales 2-0, in Sunday’s Euro 2016 Championship.
