Flea went out to make the announcement in his typically heartfelt way: “We are unable to play this evening. We’re devastated about it — we’re really sad. We love you so much. We live to rock. We live to f**king dig deep into the depths of our hearts and rock — but, unfortunately, there’s a medical thing happening, and we need to deal with it.”

There’s no indication of the “medical injury,” but drummer Chad Smith later wished Anthony a “speedy recover” on Twitter.
It really seemed to be a sudden development, too. Earlier in the evening, Flea and Chad had sat down with KROQ radio personality Kat to talk about how excited they were about closing the big annual free music fest. All seemed well at the time.
