May 1st also called May Day or International Workers’ Day, and it’s aimed at honoring the blue-collar crowd similar to the U.S. Labor Day holiday in September. The 2016 May 1 holiday falls on Sunday and is celebrated around the world, sometimes with Soviet-era touches.
May Day is a big holiday in China. Since 1999, everyone gets three days off on May 1st. Combined with the two bookend weekends, it becomes known as “The Golden Week.” People take short trips during the week-long vacation to popular travel destinations within China, Hong Kong, Korea or Japan. Travel related fees surge as much as 20% during May Day week, hence the name “Golden Week”.
Unfortunately, workers on this side of the pond won’t be catching a break this May Day. Or any May Day. No worries. We’ll keep ourselves amused with the best memes ever!
