It’s rare that a game comes along that is nothing like anything else out there, but Far Cry Primal manages that feat within the first few minutes when it puts a spear in your hand and tasks you to track and take down a woolly mammoth.
Game: Far Cry Primal
Consoles: Xbox One (reviewed), PS4, PC
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Release Date: Feb. 23
From that bloody beginning, you’re mired in the messy, brutal life of a caveman. While previous Far Cry games thrust you into the middle of nature, forcing you to survive on your cunning, wits and willingness to take on beasts one on one. Primal, though, strips away the luxury of guns and grenades and forces you to take down and control prehistoric beasts with fists and stone age weapons.
Set in Eastern Europe 12,000 years ago, the game poses you as an outcast from a tribe who is forced to cobble together allies, enemies and a growing mastery of nature to ensure your survival and rise to power. Taking on rival clans to gain control of resources and assets becomes a compelling metagame as you advance through the story.
It’s important that you enjoy the thrill of the hunt and kill, because if the repitition wears you down, there’s not much left to keep you occupied. The setting, not the story, is where the game thrives. Your options open up once you figure out how to take command of the beasts at your disposal, using birds as air strikes, saber-toothed tigers to ambush enemies and mammoths to maraud opponents’ structures.
A deep and involving game for those with the patience to prevail, Far Cry Primal is a throwback that draws primal screams of delight.
